Katelyn Childs is a Licensed Professional Counselor who received her Bachelor’s from Virginia Tech and her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Lynchburg College. She has been working in the mental health field for over 5 years in a variety of settings such as community, school, and home-based, as well as private practice. Katelyn enjoys working alongside people of all ages and backgrounds, with adolescents being her foremost passion.

Some of the presenting issues that Katelyn has supported others with are depression, anxiety, stress, OCD, issues related to grief and loss, trauma, interpersonal conflict, attachment-related difficulties, among other things. Katelyn assists children in working through their difficulties, and to learn more adaptive, beneficial ways of coping through the use of play therapy; she is currently working toward a specialization in play therapy to be credentialed as a Registered Play Therapist (RPT.) She is also in the process of being trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) with the goal of using this effective technique with adults and children alike. Katelyn believes that no matter what a person has experienced, most people can benefit from counseling, and is a strong proponent for early intervention and prevention. Katelyn’s work is most influenced by theorists such as Viktor Frankl and Carl Jung.

During the trip, Ashton explored various ways the country has coped, developed resiliency, and has overcome the impacts of trauma.
